Dr. Nicholas Mataragas of the Spine Center recently presented his data on the first fifteen cases of the new minimally invasive procedure, MIS MIDLF, on February 4, 2012 at the annual regional sales force meeting of Medtronic corporation. As the keynote speaker of the meeting, Dr. Mataragas presented surgical and hospital stay data that met or exceeded that of other minimally invasive techniques.

As the first surgeon nationally to present any data on this innovative technique, Dr. Mataragas was excited to show exceedingly low blood loss, shortened operative times even in larger patients, and fluoroscopy times that were on average 75% shorter than other minimally invasive surgeries. Due to these and other factors, patients who otherwise would not have been ideal candidates for lumbar fusion surgery such as older, osteoporotic patients, as well as the morbidly obese, are now becoming much more viable candidates for fusion surgery with much lower morbidity.
